Features such as sound system, power steering and automatic door locking were not incorporated in these cars by the BMC to cut down on cost, which has irked some of the corporators who were given these cars.
A total of 14 cars worth Rs 5.25 lakh each were bought three months ago with 7 of them meant for deputy municipal commissioners and the rest for the chairpersons of some civic statutory committees and group leaders.
Three of these seven corporators have returned the vehicles saying they don't like the plain version of the car.
Leader of opposition Devendra Amberkar, leader of the house Trishna Vishwasrao and chairperson of the public health committee Geeta Gawli -- have returned their cars after using it for a few days saying they are not happy with the plain version of the car. They claimed that this is their way of boycotting the BMC's autocratic way of functioning.
While all seven corporators have complained to the transport department, only these three have returned the cars and are using their old vehicles that they have been complaining about.
"Will the municipal commissioner take cars without the basic features for his use. Why are cost cutting measures always passed on only to corporators,"said a senior corporator. However, the three who have returned their cars were not available for comment.
The corporators contend that the BMC should understand that they represent the civic agency in public. "If the BMC wants us to portray that the BMC ill treats its corporators by giving them cars without the basic features just to save money, then its going to spoil their image in public," said another corporator.
Civic officials say they have tried to persuade the three corporators to take the cars, but in vain. These cars were purchased after frequent complaints of breakdown of their cars by these leaders.
Recently, Amberkar had surrendered his old car complaining it broke down frequently and had claimed to have used public transport or his personal vehicle for work. But the BMC made alternate arrangements and gave him another vehicle for official use.
TOI has in a series of reports highlighted the misuse of the official vehicles given to corporators by the BMC. Mayor Sunil Prabhu, in less than two years of his term, has changed three cars.
