Actress who accused actor of rape arrested for theft

MUMBAI: An actress was arrested by the Versova police for stealing jewellery from her sister's residence and on Saturday, she was remanded in police custody till Tuesday. The police are yet to recover the stolen jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh. Incidentally, the same actress had in April lodged a case of rape against a Bollywood actor at the Versova police station, stating that he had also assaulted her with a broken beer bottle, causing severe injuries.

"We are trying to find out why the actress stole the jewellery when she could have simply taken her sister's permission and borrowed it. We are inquiring if the actress is in debts," said a police officer.

The actress' sister lives separately at the New Mhada Complex in Four Bungalows, Andheri (West). A few days ago, she found her jewellery missing from the house. She reportedly asked the actress about it but the latter feigned ignorance. The sister then lodged a complaint of theft against unidentified persons at the Versova police station.

The police began the probe by questioning family members and domestic help. After the actress eventually confessed to the crime, she was arrested on Friday.
