Six Chembur residents drown at Murud beach

ALIBAUG: Six residents of Ghatla area in Chembur, drowned tragically at Murud beach on Sunday afternoon. All the victims were in their early 40's and had gone in a big group from Mumbai to picnic at Murud.

Murud police informed the names of the deceased are: Vinod Deonar, Dinesh Pawar, Dilip Ghule, Sanjay Pawar, Shankar Chavan and Rohit Jhala have drowned at Murud beach in Raigad district.

The Raigad superintendent of police, Ankush Shinde, said: "A group of 15 people had come from Mumbai to Murud for a picnic. At 12.30pm, eight men entered the sea water. Sadly, though, six of them drowned while two survived."

The SP added that there was no life guard service available at the isolated spot where the group had gone to swim.

Meanwhile at the popular Alibaug beach, which is 50km away from Murud, the civic body has provided 5 life guards. There have been no drowning tragedies at Alibaug beach in the past four years.

The relatives and family members of the victims rushed to Alibaug civil hospital where the post-mortems were conducted on Sunday.
