No punishment enough for Pathan, we were set for Nov wedding, say Pallavi & Avik families

MUMBAI: When Sajjad Pathan wielded the knife two years ago, he took one life and devastated two families.

"It is good the accused has been convicted. But no punishment is enough to compensate for what happened to our two families that have been devastated," said Dr Alok Sengupta, father of Pallavi Purkayastha's fiance Avik from Jamshedpur.

"Only death is the way to meet his (Pathan's) dastardly act. He has devastated two families and killed two tax-paying, educated citizens," said Pallavi's father Atanu.

Pathan's lawyer said nobody has ever met him since he was arrested. His colleagues are also shunning him, saying he has brought the Kashmiri community to disrepute.

Dr Sengupta, an orthopaedic surgeon who lost his son last year to a brain disease, has been keeping tabs on the case while attending to surgeries. The Purkayasthas have kept him updated.

"We were planning the wedding for November and Pallavi was killed in the most brutal manner in August. You know how elaborate Indian weddings are. Everything was bought for the wedding, and they are still lying in the same place. All that we wanted was for our children to be happy," he told TOI.

Pallavi's mother Sumita, fighting back tears, said the two years had been hell for the two families. "We not only lost our daughter, but Avik too. They were about to get married."

Atanu said Avik found it very difficult to forget the brutal manner in which Pallavi was killed. "He tried his best to cope with it. He engaged himself in another job and activities. But the memory kept haunting him. He was in agony and was depressed."

Talking about how his family was coping with the loss, Dr Sengupta said his younger son, who is mentally challenged, was unaware that Avik was no more. "Avik's mother misses him every moment and in every situation. He used to call her up every day in the morning and evening to tell her about his day. Now all that is left is a big gap."

Dr Sengupta said the families speak and meet regularly. "This is the only way we can survive. We console each other. Our children are gone but they have left behind a relationship that we are holding on to."
