Youth dies after running 5 km during police recruitment

NAVI MUMBAI: An 18-year-old youth from Virar, Saiprasad Mali, collapsed and died during the police recruitment drive at Patni Ground in Airoli on Wednesday. The youth had applied for the Thane (rural) police recruitment and had reached the ground for the mandatory 5 km run.

Mali completed the 5 km run inside the ground, but soon afterwards collapsed and died. He was taken to the civic hospital but declared dead,'' informed a Navi Mumbai police official.

Several relatives of the deceased were seen at the civic hospital in Vashi, crying inconsolably at this sudden death.

The youth was reportedly unwell and was suffering from fever at the time of the physical fitness tests on Wednesday. He (Mali) was a bright young boy who wanted to join the police force. We are all devastated at the turn of events today,'' said a relative at the hospital. Mali was a resident of Virar.

A doctor at the municipal hospital said that the medical report of the deceased along with the panchanama papers are awaited; only after that they will conclude on the cause of death.
