MUMBAI: Hours before the launch of the Metro Rail from Versova, a row of shops went up in flames at the nearby Four Bungalows market. Fire officials said the flames were likely caused by short circuit in a jewellery store. No loss of life was reported.

"We had closed shop around midnight and lay down to sleep when workers and hawkers nearby noticed fire blazing inside B R Jewellers. They alerted the fire brigade which arrived in 15-20 minutes, but by then the entire row of medical, general and hardware stores was gutted to the ground. Property and goods worth crores of rupees has been destroyed. Not everybody has insurance," said Rajnath Sharma, the owner of Sharma Dairy Farm which was destroyed as well.

Fruit vendors who line the market also suffered losses.

Neighbourhood shopkeepers alleged that the jewellery store was raided by police a few days ago for buying stolen ornaments from thieves. However, owner Bansi Joshi who stood surveying the damage Sunday afternoon denied this was so.
"I cannot say how the fire started. The police is investigating. We will reopen the store in 20 days," he said.
