MUMBAI: Mumbai Metro, which had a smooth start this morning, is now running 20-30 minutes behind schedule.

Officials said the delay was due to "technical reason." Some of the trains are now packed with passengers as it is stranded at the stations en route.

The train which was scheduled to leave around 12.10pm from Ghatkopar, left only at 12.20pm recalled a commuter. The train got stranded at Asalpha station for another ten minutes. The passengers got down at the station and many inquired with the driver and the Metro staff at the station. They were informed that there was "red signal" and the reason wasn't known. Passengers, however, got into the train and began clicking pictures.

"It is Day One and most of us are having a joy ride. We don't mind spending more time in the train. There's no office rush here," said a Suresh Mhatre, a commuter. However, some of the other commuters were frustrated due to the delays.

The trains also halted for five to ten minutes at Saki Naka station before heading for Versova, where it reached 20-30 minutes late.

This affected the frequency of trains on the reverse route. Those plying from Versova to Ghatkopar - were also delayed by 20-30 minutes, sources said.

Earlier, Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan flagged off the first service from Versova station in the western suburb.

The service was launched by Chavan along with ADAG chairman Anil Ambani at 10.10am.

The launch of metro services will revolutionise the commutation of Mumbaikars, Chavan said after the launch.

With this service, the journey on the 11.4km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch will reduce to 20 minutes which otherwise takes around 90 minutes at present by road transport.

The launch of the metro services was, however, not without controversy as Chavan had on Saturday said that he will inaugurate the services only if MMOPL (Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd) adheres to the state government-notified fares. But, later on he agreed to flag-off the service.

Admitting that there was a dispute over the fares, Chavan expressed the hope that the issue will be resolved through court.
