Surekha died on the spot, leaving behind her husband, Jayaram (38), and daughters, Jahnvi, Samrudhi and Manasvi. But Jayaram, who is recuperating from critical head and shoulder injuries at Sion hospital, is unaware of his wife's death. Given his fragile health condition, he has also not been told that their three-year-old daughter, Samrudhi, has undergone a knee-down amputation on her left leg or that their eldest daughter, Jahnvi (6), has been battling her skull injuries in a hospital in Vashi. The Naktis' three-month-old youngest daughter, Manasvi, who had a miraculous escape, is being looked after by a relative.
Jayaram's nephew performed Surekha's last rites at their village at Kalsure in Raigad on the night of the accident. "There was no point waiting. We didn't know how long Jayaram would take to recover and to come to terms with his loss. The daughters are too young to understand the tragedy," said Harish Chalke, their uncle.
It was only on Thursday that Jayaram was told that Samrudhi was also admitted to Sion hospital. "We haven't yet told him about the amputation," said Chalke. The relatives are finding it tough to keep all the information away from Jayaram that even other patients in the ward are privy to.
The hospital has been flooded with calls from across the country, offering help. "The family will need a corpus for the prostheses Samrudhi will need till she turns 21. We are forming a trust," said Dr Suleman Merchant, head of radiology. Another 14 mishap victims are being treated at the hospital.
