Sweeper held for smuggling at Shivaji airport

MUMBAI: A 21-year-old working as a cleaner for a house keeping services at Shivaji Chattrapati Maharaj International airport was caught by the Customs trying to smuggle 4kg of gold bars on early Sunday morning. Yavraj Solanki, working for A to Z house keeping services was caught red handed while he was trying to smuggle out 4 gold bars hidden inside the toilet in the west side building at the airport.

Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of customs have booked him under the prevention of customs act and are probing to find out source of the gold. According to the AIU, the official kept a secret watch on his movement and caught him on early Sunday morning. He was caught with four gold bars weighing one kg each. During the course of interrogations Solanki admitted to have smuggled 3kg of gold bars on two other occasions.

Officials suspects that somebody close to him may have given the contract to smuggle the gold bars outside the airport safely as the customs and CISF would never raise doubt on him as he was a inside employee. Sources said that this is nothing new as earlier another sweeper and CISF official were caught trying to smuggle gold bars.

"Solanki said that a unknown person had contacted him to smuggle the gold bars for consideration of Rs 60,000 per trip. He was just to remove the bars and safely He was paid Rs 1.20 lakhs for two such trips," said an official.
