A flash strike by BEST employees protesting against the new duty schedule, that paralysed Mumbai public bus services, forced the management to rush to the high court in the afternoon with an urgent application. There are 3700 buses plying in the city of Mumbai transporting around 50 lakhs passengers daily. Following the strike, buses went off the roads since 4am "causing great hardship and a virtual chaos in the city," BEST said.
The employees were protesting against the new work schedule that was to came into effect from April 1, 2014. Last week, on April 25, 2014, the industrial court had asked BEST to maintain status quo after the public undertaking failed to file an affidavit in court. BEST then approached the high court, which lifted the status quo and asked the industrial court to hear the matter on March 29. "There is no doubt that for BEST which is a public body and for the Union the issue of interim relief is of importance and it cannot be handled in such casual manner," said the judge.
The industrial court on March 29 gave the undertaking the go ahead to implement the new duty schedule. The high court said that once the Unions had adopted the legal route, they could not now call a strike after the orders went against them.
