MUMBAI: When Bhaskar Desai started running at age 56, he did so primarily to reduce the triglyceride levels in his body. He did not know then that his "exceptionally lightweight body" would allow him to run faster and longer than many, winning him several events in his age category.

It has been five years since Bhaskar finished his first marathon. This year, the 61-year-old is heading to the US to participate in Boston Marathon. The Goregaon resident's energy levels and enthusiasm for life hide the tragedies he has suffered. He lost his 23-year-old son and wife in successive years. He says fellow runners are now his kin.

Bhaskar's training schedule is erratic, but he more than makes up for it with the number of marathons he runs in a year. He has clocked 3 hours 50 minutes at the Mumbai Marathon. And in 2013, he won about Rs 1 lakh in prize money by finishing in the top three in the veteran or super veteran categories of various events.

'Women face many challenges while running on the road'

MUMBAI: Sangeeta Shetty is a tough woman. How else would one describe anybody who runs 100km over nearly 17 hours and endures uncomplainingly the hardships those long hours bring with them? And all of it merely to win a certificate and a medal.

Sangeeta started running in 2010 and, in no time, became an ultra-marathon runner, like her husband Sunil. Last November, they became the first Indian couple to run 100km together. "When I began, very few women ran. Now the numbers are growing steadily," says Sangeeta.

"Road running has its challenges and hurdles, especially for women. But the joy that you derive from it is indescribable."

In Mumbai, the 47-year-old has to invariably tailor her practice sessions. Her husband gives her company until daybreak before shooting off at his pace. And oftentimes, she is forced to run loops in a park that appears safe. But when you are training for 100km, she says, "running loops can be terribly boring".
