PWD issues fiat to ensure proper barricading at public rallies

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra public works department ( PWD) has issued a fiat to its engineers to ensure secure barricading at public rallies during the election campaign.

In a circular issued on Tuesday, the department has said it has been brought to its notice that the barricades that are being set up are not secure enough and have collapsed at a number of meetings. "This is causing concern as it is becomes difficult to regulate the crowd when the barricades collapse especially when the meetings are being addressed by VIPs."

The circular has warned that barricades at rallies addressed by VIPs must be strong and should withstand the weight of the crowd. If this does not happen, it has warned, it could lead to a law and order situation.

The circular further states that the deputy engineer will be responsible for ensuring the barricades are made from the requisite material and are set up as per guidelines.
