It is well known that colours used during the Holi festival contain acids, alkalis and pieces of glass that can cause skin irritation or even impair vision. Mumbai-based retina surgeon Dr S Natrajan said, "While enthusiastically colouring each other's face, the colour may accidentally enter the eyes. Throwing balloons may cause blunt trauma leading to bleeding inside the eye and diminished vision. If it is thrown from a height, the injury could be disastrous."
He said that people should wash the eye immediately if colour enters the eye. "In case of ocular bleeding, cover the eyes with a clean cloth or cotton, put a sticking tape over it and rush to the nearest ophthalmic surgeon," he said.
Doctors say that people should only use freshly opened antibiotic eye-drops in the eyes. "No household medicines, oils or old eye-drops should be put into the eyes, or the wound may get worse," said the doctor. Touching, squeezing or massaging the eye is not advised.
"In severe injuries, even with the treatment, the visual outcome is guarded and the treatment is oriented towards cosmetic preservation of eye and saving finger vision," said Dr Natrajan who is also the president of the Ocular Trauma Society of India.
