Aditya Dubey from Bhandup was admitted to Wadia Hospital on February 28 with fever and loose motions. His condition, according to his relatives, did not improve and he was shifted to the ICU after three days. He was diagnosed with haemorrhagic fever and the Wadia doctors suspected that he could have suffered some bleeding. During his ICU stay, Aditya developed swelling in his right hand. A minor procedure was conducted on March 6 to remove fluid . "His condition did not get better. The pain remained and his hand had turned black," said a relative. The family was finally told on March 9 that the boy had developed gangrene. But Wadia doctors denied negligence. "There are ailments that have rare manifestations,"said CEO M Bodhanwala.
Medical director Dr Yeshwant Amdekar said haemorrhagic fever can have complications, like leaking and clotting. The child also had Budd-Chiari syndrome, in which the blood flow from liver is completely or partially blocked. The family took discharge from Wadia Hospital on March 10 before they could run detailed tests on what could have caused the gangrene.
KEM Hospital dean Dr S Parkar said, "We had to amputate to stop the spread of infection." It is a medico-legal case and so we informed the police," she said.
