Support for victimized Mumbai University professor pours in

MUMBAI: Several departments at the Mumbai University did not hold classes on Wednesday as students protested the suspension of econometrics professor Neeraj Hatekar. The silence of varsity Vice-Chancellor Rajan Welukar has prompted students to now boycott the upcoming convocation on Sunday.

The University Community for Democracy and Equality (UCDE) called upon students, teachers and karmacharis (other staffers) to participate in a silent protest on Sunday at the Kalina campus. Chief guest for the convocation, scientist R A Mashelkar, has been asked not to attend the ceremony and demonstrate his support against the suspension. Hatekar was suspended on Saturday for speaking to the media about the decline of the university's academic and governance standards. Authorities claimed he gave "false information."

"Students are going to send mails and letters to convocation invitees urging them not to be a part of it as unjust and arbitrary practices are being followed by the University administration," said UCDE spokesperson Prashant.

Support for Hatekar has come from all corners of India. Historian Ramachandra Guha tweeted, "Professor Hatekar is an outstanding scholar whose work I have long admired. Maharashtra was the crucible of progressive intellectual thinking in India. Mumbai U should honour this history, not undermine it."

The Aam Admi Party (AAP), too, batted for him, saying "Prof Hatekar dared to expose the corruption in the department and the result was that he had to face the backlash of the system." Accusing Velukar of "blatant misuse of powers," AAP said the V-C should be suspended.

The Bombay University and College Teachers' Union has issued a note saying the suspension order is "illegal, improper, unjust and in gross violation of the principles of natural justice."

In a note, BUCTU president C R Sadasivan said Hatekar's suspension was not the management council's agenda. "Madhu Paranjpe (a council member) had expressed at the meeting a strong opinion that before initiating any action, the V-C should give an opportunity to Hatekar of being heard on the issue involved... It is most unfortunate, if not condemnable that in spite of this, the V-C went ahead and exercised his emergency powers."

Meanwhile, early on Wednesday, students and faculty protested outside the Kalina campus, with AAP's Mayank Gandhi participating in the protest. Later, they formed a procession that led through the university and symbolically ended after four hours outside the economics department. Departments including Hindi, German, economics and political science did not hold lectures; some other departments held fewer lectures as students wanted to participate in the protest.

Later, when Welukar came to the Phiroze Shah Mehta Bhavan (department of political science), the protest was diverted there. Despite demands that the V-C address students, no response was given.

What they say

It is heartening to see widespread support among the academic community for this fine scholar, unfairly persecuted. Maharashtra was the crucible of progressive intellectual thinking in India. Mumbai U should honour this history, not undermine it. | Tweet by historian Ram Guha

The suspension of Prof Hatekar is an issue of the university's democracy, an ideal every sensitive student cherishes. But the high-handedness of the MU administration is characteristic of draconian rule inside the university. | Prashant, spokesperson of UCDE

We call upon the VC to withdraw the suspension order immediately, take criticisms positively and pave the way for the university administration to work towards improvement of the academic, financial and managerial administration of our prestigious university. | C R Sadasivan, BUCTU president

Suspended prof moves HC

Suspended Prof Neeraj Hatekar has moved the Bombay high court claiming the action against him is "patently illegal." His petition states the V-C cannot suspend him and that the decision of suspension has to be taken by the varsity's management council of the university. Also, there is a format for suspension which has to mention a proper reason, the petition said.
