Among the Maruti's occupants, Dr Priti Kamble (30) bore the brunt of the impact as she was on the front passenger's seat. "It is she who usually drives our car. But as fate willed, I was behind the wheel at the time," her husband Anil (31), an animator with a media company, told the police from his hospital bed. The car was so badly mangled that it took the fire brigade 30 minutes to cut through the jumble of metal and pull out its occupants. Priti died after being admitted to JJ Hospital while Anil, along with his brother Nishith (25), whose injuries include serious fractures, are in Global Hospital, Parel.
The Skoda was being driven by Altamont Road resident Shaan Kalwani (22), a student at the Government Law College, Churchgate. He was returning from a Bandra restaurant along with four friends. Doctors and the police are surprised that despite the head-on hit, he was unhurt. But two of his friends suffered fractures.
Eyewitnesses told the police the Skoda did not slow down though the Maruti was within sight. "They told us the Skoda was being driven at 100-120 kmph," said deputy commissioner of police (zone V) Dhananjay Kulkarni, who has additional charge of zone III that includes Worli. "Kalwani told us he drove on as the signal was green but we are not buying that. The accident occurred around 12.15am, by when signals go into the flash mode, meaning the signal in question was orange and blinking," Kulkarni said.
The Kambles were returning home to Worli's Ambedkar Nagar from Hotel Sealord. "We had gone there for dinner. We reached the hotel around 10.30pm. Minutes after we had placed our order, the lights went out. After waiting for some time, we cancelled the order and decided to pack a parcel from Delhi Darbar in Grant Road," Anil told the police. For some reason, the family left their car at Sealord and hired a cab for Grant Road. Around midnight, they returned to Sealord, where their own car was parked. A few minutes after driving off, they were hit.
The accident spot is a stone's throw away from the Worli police station. Hearing a bang, an officer rushed to the scene, summed up the situation and called the fire brigade. "We have seized Kalwani's vehicle documents and driving licence. He will be produced before the Bhoiwada Court on Thursday," said senior inspector Dipak Pawar of the Worli police station.
Kalwani's preliminary medical examination showed he was not drunk. "Test reports of his blood and urine samples are awaited," Kulkarni said.
TOI's calls to Kalwani's friend Shivang Desai, who was in his car at the time of the accident, went unanswered. The Skoda is owned by Kalwani's father. The police have booked Kalwani under the Indian Penal Code's sections 279 (rash driving), 304-A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), and 337 and 338 (grievous hurt and endangering life).
Pawar said the one-km stretch between Glaxo and Poddar junctions is prone to accidents at night. "Eight or ten accidents have occurred here in the last 11 months."
A doctor at Global Hospital said Nishith is in the medical ICU and Anil in the surgical ICU. "Nishith has a nasal bone fracture and hematoma (blood collection) in the pelvic region. He also has injuries on the face. He has been drifting in and out of consciousness."
Meanwhile at Powai... ABEST bus (top) rammed into eight parked vehicles near D Mart, Powai, around 4.45pm on Wednesday. The worst impact was on a Mahindra Xylo (above). The bus's driver, Krishna Dabhade, has been arrested for rash driving and endangering life. He told BEST authorities the bus's steering wheel got jammed.
