MUMBAI: A six-year-old class I student was killed after a speeding Skoda ran him over in Mumbai on Thursday.

The accused, Tejas Shah, rushed the child, Mohammad Irfan Sayyad, to a private hospital but he couldn't survive. Irfan was the youngest of seven siblings and stayed with his labourer parents.

"Prima facie, Shah did not appear drunk but his blood samples have been sent for an analysis," said an official.

Every evening, Irfan and his brothers would visit a mosque near their home to offer prayers. But on Thursday, Irfan went on his own. "I was in a hurry to leave for work and fed him some biscuits around 8 pm. I had no idea he would go alone," said his mother, Saira.

Police said Irfan was returning from the mosque and was crossing a busy stretch to head back home when he was hit.

"Locals witnessed the mishap and soon crowds started to gather at the spot. Shah, 26, got out of the car and lifted the child into his car. He then took him to hospital," said a police officer.

Irfan had sustained severe head injuries. "We had no inkling about the accident till about 9.30 pm. The mosque started making announcements about the mishap in a bid to trace the child's family. They circulated his skull cap and chappals which were lying at the spot. One look at the belongings and I knew they were my grandson's," said Irfan's grandmother, Mehboob Bi.
