Not just self-flagellation, Moharram is also about sermons and songs

Black is the signature hue of mourning and it understandably dominates Shia pockets in the city. Black banners, flags, replicas commemorating the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammed's grandson Imam Hussain and his 72 supporters at the battle of Karbala (Iraq) dot the landscape. Adding to the melancholic milieu are loud chants and recitations of marsiyas, nauhas (mournful poetry), recorded or live, from different majlises (meetings) at mosques, community halls or homes. Moharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is here and the city is about to wake up to the annual public expression of a sect's collective grief over the mayhem on the desert plains of Karbala centuries ago.

Moharram is about more than a band of bare-bodied men self-flagellating with chains and tiny sharp knives. For the Shias, remembrance of the Karbala martyrs is an article of faith. And it is observed in different ways. From the first day of Moharram (November 5) to the 10th day (November 14) of Imam Hussain's martyrdom called ashura, Shias will host sessions of preaching, lectures and recitation of mournful poetry. Leading such sessions is the one held at Masjid-e-Iranian or Mughal Mosque at Dongri.

Here, octogenarian Shia scholar Mirza Mohammed Athar has delivered the Moharram sermon for the last 55 years. The Lucknow-based Mirza Athar gets excited when he talks of his 56th year at the same venue: "I am old but don't feel fatigued by my sermons at the same venue for the last 55 years." As Mirza Athar prepares to mount the pulpit at the Mughal Mosque's beautifully bedecked and chandelierdecorated prayer hall, Kausar Zaidi, anchor for 28 years at the Mughal Mosque, adds, "Mirza Athar's sermons are telecast live across the world.

He has become an iconic figure in the history of Moharram majlises." Not far from the Mughal Mosque is Kaisar Baugh, another important venue for Moharram majlis. Here senior cleric Maulana Abid Bilgrami narrates the tribulations of Imam Hussain's small group's fight against the tyrannical Ummayid king Yazid who wanted endorsement from Imam Hussain , which the latter refused. "Shias shun celebrations, including weddings and birthday parties for 12 days, two months or even for 40 days from the beginning of Moharram," informs Mohib Nasser, president of Mehfil-e-Mohibbane-Panjetan which organizes Kaisar Baugh's majlises.

A member of Khoja Shia Ishnaashri Jamaat, a part of the Shias, Nasser adds that scholars' lectures combine both theteachings of Islam and mourning of the tragedy at Karbala. Since there are chances of Shia-Sunni clashes during Moharram either due to the mention of controversial topics by partisan preachers or over the route of the processions , individuals like Javed Shroff, managing trustee of Habib Ismail Educational Trust, play a vital role in preventing clashes. "I roam the streets ensuring Moharram is observed peacefully. For 10 days in Moharram, I become a bridge between the two sects' leaders and the police," says Shroff. Dawoodi Bohras are also Shias, so they too observe this month with solemnity. The crowded Bhendi Bazaarbased Saifee Masjid, the nerve centre of the Bohras, attracts a huge crowd during the first 10 days of Moharram. Around 1.5 lakh Bohras across the world have registered themselves to get a seat at the mosque while Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin's heir apparent Syedi Mufaddal Saifuddin delivers sermons.

"They have been issued cards, and every registered pilgrim will get a chance at least once within 10 days to attend the sermon," says Syedna's spokesperson Abdeali Bhanpurawala. Screens have been put up at over 50 places across the city up to far-off suburbs like Palghar and Mumbra for those who cannot be accommodated at Saifee Mosque. The congregations at the Zainabia Hall at Bhendi Bazaar will also be packed, and the chanting of slogans, and recitation of melancholic poetry that recalls the tragedy of Karbala will fill the air once again.
