MUMBAI: A canopy of lights and fireworks shone like a celestial blessing over the city on Sunday. Multitudes of people across various communities celebrated Diwali, while Lakshmi Puja occupied pride of place in the evening rituals.

Monday will see the start of the new year Vikram Samvat 2070 and Tuesday's Bhai Dooj will bring the five-day festival to a close.

On Sunday, around 600 devotees arrived at the Mahalaxmi mandir in Vile Parle (E) before dusk and as many were expected at night. "We are having an 'oti bharan' ceremony followed by Lakshmi puja," said patron Ravindra Joshi.

Gurdwaras in the city celebrated Bandi Chhod Diwas, an event which commemorates the release of 52 Hindu princes from a Gwalior prison by Guru Hargobind. "A huge deepmala is lit in the gurdwara compound to recall how Amritsar was lit when the Guru brought the hostages home," said Sardar Trilok Singh of Powai. Singh is a kirtankar at Sri Guru Gobind Singh Darbar located opposite Powai lake. For the last 40 years, Sikhs and Sindhis in the area have been participating in the Diwali morning Gurbani paath and kirtan, and joyfully accept karanh prasad and langar at the darbar.

Diwali day is also special for the Jains as Bhagwan Mahavir attained nirvana on this day. Boondi laddoos were distributed to 1,500 devotees at the Adinath B D Jain temple in Borivli to commemorate his moksh, said spokesperson Jayantibhai Doshi.

As the new Vikram Samvat 2070 begins at Bali Pratipada on Monday, Bengal Club at Shivaji Park will celebrate its annual Annakoot Mahapuja or Govardhan Puja. "Annakoot (mountain of food) is dedicated to the day Lord Krishna defeated Indra and held aloft Mount Govardhan on his little finger. The mountain of food represents the hallowed Govardhan, which guarded the inhabitants living under its shadow," said spokesperson Prasoon Rakshit.

On Bali Pratipada, men present gifts to their wives, while on Bhai Dooj brothers visit their sisters bearing gifts.
