MUMBAI: A member of the film wing of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena attempted suicide by overdosing on painkillers on a street in Dindoshi on Thursday. Vilas Sudhrik had also penned a suicide note, addressed to MNS chief Raj Thackeray, expressing his displeasure over the way the party handled the incident of violence at businessman Raj Kundra's mixed martial arts event recently.

Sudhrik's party co-workers rushed him to a private hospital, where he was recuperating.

On October 27, a group of 25 to 30 members of the MNS film wing were accused of barging into Filmalaya studio in Andheri where Kundra's event, Super Fight League, was on. The group was led by Ghanshyam Parab and included Sudhrik.

Bouncers struck back at them. Some time after the police arrived to take stock, another MNS group of 50 barged in and vandalized the studio "in retaliation".

"Sudhrik was arrested and put behind bars on charges of molestation and extortion," Nitin Dalvi, a friend and member of the MNS Mathadi Kamgaar Sena, said. "The charges upset him as he had gone to the studio only to inquire if foreign artistes had been hired for the event. He was further taken aback when nobody from the party visited him or even made a call to him. After being released on bail, he stayed indoors and started keeping quiet."

Kundra and his actor-wife Shilpa Shetty had also met Thackeray to bring about a truce.

Around 8.30 pm on Thursday, Sudhrik swallowed around 30 painkiller tablets at a bus stop at Santosh Nagar. When he collapsed on the ground, co-workers from the party noticed him and rushed him to a private hospital. His family was informed.

Sudhrik's brother said he did not know what was troubling his sibling.

In his suicide note, Sudhrik wrote: "If a party worker is honestly fighting for the cause of people but his superiors within the party are unjust to him, how is he supposed to work? I'm unhappy with the injustice meted out to me and Parab. Please help my son and daughters with their education and please don't let anyone harass my family."

Officers at the Dindoshi police station recorded Sudhrik's statement.
