MUMBAI: Bombay high court has directed directed the Central Board of Film Certification to reply whether it considered censorship guidelines while approving the film " Ram Leela." The court also directed producers Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Eros Films to reply to a petition which alleged that the film portrays Lord Ram in a bad light. The film released with a U/A certificate last weekend.

A division bench of Justice V M Kanade and Justice M S Sonak on November 18, 2013 heard a petition by Maharashtra Ramleela Mandal's vice-president Sandeep Shukla urging restrain on the producers from using the word "Ram Leela'' in the title saying it misleads and hurts sentiments of Hindus

Shukla's advocate B P Pandey argued that having seen the film it is a "character assassination" of Lord Ram. He said in the film the leading character is named Ram and is shown as a "womaniser, an alcoholic and a drug-peddler." "Hunuman is shown with a gun and the vanar sena (monkey brigade) is shown dancing," said Pandey.

He said censor board has overlooked the "vulgarity, sex and violence" in the film. "They show a bare-chested Ram dancing and project an image of a Casanova," said Pandey referring to dialogues. He argued that the certificate was granted to the film overlooking the 1997 guidelines under the Cinematograph Act which debars depiction of violence and harming of human sensibilities. "The film is exactly the opposite," he said.

Bhansali and Eros's advocate Akshay Patil said identical petitions were dismissed by Delhi and Gujarat high courts and withdrawn before Allahabad high court. He said the board while clearing the film considered it from various angles. "One man's meat is another man's poison. What applies to the film also applies to the title," he said. Opposing relief, he said Shukla should appeal before the Central government.

But Pandey submitted that there is no provision of appeal by a third party to objectionable scenes and the government on its own can exercise revisional powers. Adjourning the hearing to November 27, 2013 the judges directed the board "to reply whether it considered the guidelines" and the producers to file their say.
