Family at Campa Cola is third time lucky

MUMBAI: The Malhotra family that lives in Worli's controversial Campa Cola society is acquiring something of a reputation for having narrow escapes.

The joint family of three brothers - Rohit, Yogesh and Kapil - has three flats in B Y Apartments, but they've all been spared the BMC's hammer that will fall on November 12 because two of them are on the third floor and one on the fifth. All floors above the fifth across seven buildings in the complex are illegal and are to be razed.

So the brothers have reason to feel lucky - just the way they did on 26/11 and on March 12, 1993, when Mumbai was rocked by serial blasts.

During the 2008 terror attacks, Rohit and his wife Sarita were at The Taj when it was attacked. Fortunately, they weren't near the family's two jewellery stores at the hotel - four bullets pierced the outer walls of one of their stores - but were dining at the Zodiac Grill restaurant to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. "We spent a harrowing time in the night in the restaurant and were rescued in the morning," Sarita said.

In 1993, Yogesh, who owned a jewellery store at Hotel Sea Rock in Bandra, had just left the store when the bomb targeting the hotel went off.

The Malhotra family is lucky that the axe will not fall on their flats when illegal floors in the Campa Cola society are razed this month, but they are also feeling bad that many of their neighbours will have to vacate their flats.

Rohit's daughter, Diksha, who is 15, said she is sad she will lose friends she grew up with.

"We, as children who had bonded for over 15 years, cannot reconcile ourselves to the fact that we are living in a country which has no heart for us. There is no humane act from the authorities," Diksha said.

Rohit Malhotra said it was worrying that, despite being on floors that were legal, they might be deprived of utilities like the lift and water connections during the BMC's demolition process.

"Will senior citizens who are bedridden be attended to, and does the BMC have a plan for an emergency?" he asked.

Meanwhile, a sombre mood has engulfed the Campa Cola compound on Diwali, with chantings of Hanuman Chalisa renting the air.

"Our society is one big family. If one member loses their home, others will be affected," said Naresh Bagri, a second-floor resident of Orchid building.
