In addition to gift hampers and the McDowell's trophy, Sunday's champions will win a free return trip to Lappeenranta (Finland) where they compete for the title. The world champions stand to win cash prizes and sponsorships in addition to an international recording deal.
India is one of 32 participating nations. KWC is brought to India by Savio D'Sa in association with Nash Events.
D'Sa, nicknamed India's 'Karaoke King', says this is the country's only English singing talent hunt. "I hope it will encourage more aspiring singers to fulfil their dreams and make singing their passion-profession," he says.
The city trials and zonals were held across Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Guwahati, Lucknow, Jaipur, Nagpur and Chandigarh. The zonal shows saw some "electrifying contestants" who left the judges Meiyang Chang, Ishq Bector, Nandani Sirkar, Shilpa Rao, Shibani Kashyap, Shruti Pathak, Sonu Kakkar & VJ Bani spellbound. They were amazed not just by the amateurs' voices and performances but by the way they worked the crowd to advantage.
A spirited Sonu Kakkar set the stage on fire with her hit track 'Babuji' in Mumbai. Ishq Bector beat boxed along with Shilpa Rao in Hyderabad while Shibani Kashyap and Chang left a lasting flavour of Bollywood. Ashok Capoor, president, United Spirits, says, "McDowell's No 1 has always engaged young adults, and used music to bring friends together. In fact this thought culminated in our new karaoke App."
