MUMBAI: A state-of-the-art trauma care hospital at Jogeshwari near the Western Express Highway will be inaugurated on Monday. The city's first trauma care centre is expected to take load from major hospitals in the western suburbs.

The 13-storey hospital with 304 beds has been built by the BMC to cater to accident victims, but beds will also be reserved for general medicine patients. The hospital has been named after the late Bal Thackeray and will be called Hinduhridyasamrat Balasaheb Thackeray. It has 10% beds reserved for middle-class patients who want separate rooms by paying extra.

The hospital was built at a cost of Rs 125 crore. It will take eight weeks for the hospital to be commissioned entirely.

Additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said this hospital will be included in the Sion group of hospitals, which means that apart from exchange of doctors from the hospital, the dean of the two hospitals will also be the same. She also added that another trauma centre, which is planned in the eastern suburbs, will come up in Bhandup and the BMC will take four years to complete the construction.
