"Puja festivities peak at navami and dashami is immersion day. Devotees often have tears in their eyes as they invoke Ma Durga for an early 'punaragman' (return) the following year," says Swami Sarvalokananda, who heads the Ramakrishna Math and Mission in Mumbai. He says the 'pran visarjan' ceremony will be followed by the 'sindoor utsav' and immersion.
Wrapping up festivities, the Kalidas Hall puja in Mulund prides itself on being one of the few events where visitors are served at tables instead of being made to stand as they eat. "Around 2,000 people enjoyed the bhog prasad on saptami, ashtami and navami. We offered sweets and 'begun bhaja', a fried snack, apart from regular prasad of khichdi, labda (mixed vegetables), chutney and payesh," says Subal Kumar Saha, general secretary of the Bengal Institute of Art and Culture that is organizing the event for the 28th year.
Over in Vashi, weekend crowds flocked to the grand Bengal Trust puja organized with a budget of Rs 60 lakh. "Around 50,000 visitors of all communities arrived each day for bhog and Bollywood style entertainment as well as cultural shows," says president Asit Ghosh.
