'Rapist' caught after DNA match with newborn

MUMBAI: The Malwani police have arrested an auto driver for sexually assaulting a teenage girl last year after the DNA of her newborn child matched his. During their probe, the police had grilled 100 to 150 men and finally narrowed down the list of suspects to six. The alleged rapist turned out to be one of them.

Mohammad Siraj Khan, a father of seven, was arrested on Sunday. So confident was he of evading the law that he never left Mumbai after the offence, police officers said.

The teenage survivor, who has a mental health condition and suffers from polio, was taken to a hospital on September 24, 2012, by her parents after they realised she had missed her menstrual cycle for a few months. Doctors announced that she was five months pregnant. Her parents registered a complaint of rape with the Malwani police, which launched a major investigation. Due to her mental condition, the survivor could not provide any information on her assaulter.

In January this year, the girl delivered a baby boy. "The survivor's family did not send the newborn to a shelter. They accepted him as a part of the family. But the baby was weak and died in two months," said DCP Mahesh Patil. The family resides in the western suburbs, where the father runs a stove-repair stall. The survivor's brother too suffers from polio. The siblings dropped out of school after class IV.

Meanwhile, the police carried on their probe. They found that the survivor would often visit people's homes in the neighbourhood to watch TV. "We grilled 100 to 150 men and narrowed down the list to six based on their background and the frequency with which they were spotted in the girl's neighbourhood," said Patil.

The teenage girl's blood samples, along with those of the six suspects, were sent to the Kalina forensic lab. In January, the newborn's blood samples too were sent for DNA profiling. The reports, which came this month, matched Khan's samples. Khan, a resident of Azmi Nagar in Malwani, confessed he accosted the girl and raped her more than once in April 2012—in an auto garage and along Malwani creek. The police are checking if he has a past crime record. A metropolitan court remanded him in police custody till October 19.
