MUMBAI: The state government will appoint magistrates and serving judges to the state Wakf Board CEO's post. The move comes three months after the former CEO, N D Pathan, was arrested red-handed while accepting a bribe. Additional metropolitan magistrate Sayyed Hussain's name has been sent to the law and judiciary department for notification.

State minorities affairs and wakf minister Naseem Khan said Pathan was serving his extended term when he was caught. "For speedy justice and a transparent system, we have decided to appoint serving magistrates and judges," he said. The Waqf board CEO has to be an officer of deputy secretary of government of India rank. Earlier, the post was occupied by Muslim IAS and allied services officers.

On June 29, Pathan was arrested for allegedly accepting a Rs 30,000 bribe at his residence.

The law and judiciary department wrote to the registrar (establishment) of the Bombay HC, requesting to appoint Muslim magistrate/judge as Waqf board CEO. The registrar furnished a list of Muslim magistrate and judges. The state then zeroed in on Hussain's name. "He has a clean record and is known for fast disposal of cases. We had requested for a Muslim judicial officer since as per the Waqf Act provisions, the post has to be occupied by a Muslim. The HC has given its approval and orders will be issued in a day or two," said Khan.
