Most schools are making up for the loss by reducing Diwali and Christmas vacations or by making students attend additional classes on Saturdays and other holidays. The rejig of holidays has cast a shadow on the travel plans, which parents chart out in advance. "Since we have relatives coming over during Diwali, we usually plan our vacation during the Christmas break. But the school suddenly announced that Christmas holidays will now begin from December 29 instead of December 25," said the parent of a student studying at Arya Vidya Mandir in Bandra (W). Parents have been informed that the school will remain closed on December 25, but hold classes on December 26, 27 and 28, then again stay shut from December 29 to January 1, 2014.
"We had no option but to cut down Diwali vacations by a week. Earlier we used to give three weeks off for Diwali but this year we will only remain shut for two weeks," said Seema Maindiratta, principal of Kharghar's DAV High School. "We also worked on Saturdays for a few weeks," she added.
Dates for the Diwali vacation have also been altered, which has resulted in confusion. "Schools used to be shut for 21 days during Diwali every year. But this year, the department has announced only 18 days for the same. This is unfair to us," said Uday Nare, a teacher from Hansraj Morarji Public School in Andheri (W).
Parents were also surprised to see educational institutes holding classes on the October 2 public holiday. "Students and teachers are getting frustrated but we have no other option. We have already conducted classes on two Saturdays. We may have to forgo some other public holidays," said Rashmi Choudhri, principal of Podar International School in Nerul.
The education department has given no guidelines to schools on how to compensate for skipping lectures due to the extra holidays. "We have given schools the freedom to decide on their schedule. They can either call students on Saturdays or cut down on other holidays," said N B Chavan, deputy director of (school) education.
