MUMBAI: The state health department may be busy planning the expansion of Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayi Yojana, but over 3,000 grievances have been registered against various hospitals offering treatment under the scheme.

The cashless health insurance scheme, started last year in eight districts, including Mumbai, has covered 49 lakh families for over 900 ailments. But more than 35% grievances registered by patients claim that hospitals have taken money from them as deposit or for treatment and medications.

"Patients do not have to pay for anything. Any hospital found taking money will face action," said K Venkatesan, chief operating officer. Most grievances are from Mumbai—1,443. Seven hospitals have been debarred from the scheme.
