MUMBAI: In order to commemorate the 284th death anniversary of the great Maratha Warrior Admiral Kanhoji Angre, a solemn ceremony was conducted at Naval Dockyard premises, Mumbai by INS Angre. The statue of Admiral Kanhoji Angre, located in the Naval Dockyard was garlanded in order to pay mark of respect to the Great Sea Warrior. The event was coordinated by INS Angre, which is the base depot ship of the Western Naval Command. The unit was established on 15 Sep 1951 and is named after Admiral Kanhoji Angre.

Kanohji Angre was conferred the title of 'Sarkhel' (Admiral of the Fleet') by the ruling Maratha Kings for his daring exploits in the entire West Coast of India, from Surat to Calicut during 17th and 18th century. Maratha Naval Ships scored many victories at sea against the European Naval Powers such as Spain, Netherlands, Portugal, France and Britain. It was the period when the name of Kanhoji Angre instilled fear amongst those who dared challenge him.
