MUMBAI: The minister of state for shipping, Milind Deora, launched a project for development of tourism at the Kanhoji Angre lighthouse on Friday. Previously known as Khanderi (Kennery) island, it is located about 11 nautical miles south of Colaba.

Speaking at the event, Deora said, "The objectives of developing lighthouses are threefold: to conserve heritage, to generate awareness about our rich maritime history and to create public interest in shipping. I'm glad that the people of Mumbai will have a new weekend destination to travel and relax."

Pradeep Kumar Sinha, secretary, shipping said, "The director general of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) has already carried out feasibility study for 15 lighthouses through which another three lighthouses are proposed to be covered under this project. The work of restoration and conservation of existing lighthouse structure, landscape enhancement of island etc. will add to the maintenance of lighthouses."

The Kanhoji Angre island lighthouse is a 17m high octagonal masonry tower having elevation of 47m. The fort bastion and canon point in the island are worth a visit.

Along with the Kanhoji Angre lighthouse, the tourist potential of Sunk Rock and Dolphin's lighthouse, which are just a stone's throw from the Gateway of India, is also being tapped. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 38 crore and will be implemented in PPP Mode.
