MUMBAI : Parents of Dunne's Institute , a school in Colaba, have moved the Bombay High Court for direction to a trust to allow pre-primary students to use the lift to reach their classrooms on the fourth and sixth floors. The lift has been out of order for over a year.
The school runs its pre-primary section consisting of playschool, nursery, lower and upper kindergarten on the higher floors of K R Cama Oriental Institute Building opposite Lions Gate.
According to the petition, in February 2012 the school wrote to the landlord K R Cama Trust for speedy action saying students mostly aged two and half to six years are climbing the stairs and facing hardships. Letters were also addressed to the local civic ward office, Public Works Department and to the Azad Maidan Police complaining about the extreme negligence of the trustees.
An appeal was also made by the Parent Teacher Association saying the health of innocent children is being endangered as they run risk of harming their spine and knee in the long run with heavy school bags.'' After sending a lawyer's notice to the Trust on March 21, 2013, the parents moved high court.
A bench headed by Justice S J Vazifdar has posted the hearing on April 10, 2013 asking Salvi to ensure that all the respondents are served notices intimating them of the hearing.
