MUMBAI: Suspected Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) operative Farooq Naikoo (37) has told investigators that the terror outfit blackmailed him into spying for them.

"They threatened that if I didn't obey their orders, then they would inform the Indian police about my association with them," Naikoo said during his interrogation. In January, he was arrested along with Mohammed Talukdar (36) from a Masjid Bunder lodge for allegedly possessing fake currency notes totalling Rs 27,000. Talukdar worked as the lodge manager.

Naikoo, a BSc dropout from Noo-ul-Islam Boys' college in J&K's Baramulla district, told the police that he went to Pakistan in 2001 for the first time to meet his relatives. "I wanted to take a relative's help to go to abroad for work. I stayed in Rawalpindi for over three months," Naikoo said.

"In 2007, I went to Pakistan again to attend a wedding and stayed there for three months. My third visit was in 2009 where I met a HM member who befriended me and spoke to me about the plight of Muslims in India," he said.

Naikoo claims the HM member took him to a camp where his passport was scanned and he was trained to use the internet. "They trained him in using a web camera, sending and receiving emails, using Skype and Ringa," said a senior police officer.

When he returned to India, he was asked to click the photographs of Azadgang bridge in Baramullah, a power project, army units and cantonments. Then he was told to save the photos in the 'draft' folder of his email account. According to the police, Naikoo's handlers knew the password and would access the email account. "The drafts were deleted after his handlers downloaded the photos," an officer said.

Naikoo, who stayed in a rented flat in Koparkhairne in Navi Mumbai, came to Maharashtra in 2010 with his uncle Gulam Bala to sell dry fruits.

His father Gulam Hussain died in 1984. Naikoo's two younger brothers, Shakeel and Bilal, work in J&K as salesman and accountant respectively while his eldest sister Saleema Bano died in June 2010 due to cancer. "I was 27 when a friend told me to start a wholesale business of selling chewing gum in J&K. I took a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh from a bank but suffered huge losses," Naikoo told police. The crime intelligence unit arrested Naikoo on January 16 and seized three CDs, a hard disk and two cellphones. Naikoo has been booked for possessing counterfeit notes and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act has been invoked for his alleged links with the HM. Naikoo has been in contact with Pakistan army officials and Kashmiri militants, the police said.
