Opposition demands open poll, sends DF into frenzy

MUMBAI: The near-empty treasury benches brought embarrassment to the ruling DF in the legislative assembly on Monday as the Opposition teamed up and sought an open poll on the supplementary demands.

The trouble broke out when several Congress and NCP MLAs left the House in the evening, safe in the belief that there wasn't much business. Towards the end of the over three-hour discussion on the supplementary demands of the revenue, forest, higher and technical education, and rural development departments

, the Opposition sprung a surprise and demanded a poll instead of a voice vote.

Sadashiv Patil, who was in the chair, adjourned the assembly twice, allowing legislative affairs minister Harshavardhan Patil and others to order their missing legislators to rush to the Vidhan Sabha

The assembly was adjourned again for 10 minutes, as Congress and NCP legislators trickled into the House.

Later, Harshavardhan Patil assured the House that a meeting would be held with the CM over the poor budgetary allocation to Opposition MLAs. The Opposition acquiesced and the supplementary demands were passed with voice vote. The demands were cleared by the legislative council on Monday. - Ambarish Mishra
