"I had finished an assignment at Goa and was returning to my Mahim residence. Around 6.30pm on Monday, I boarded a private bus from Mapusa. At 10pm, we halted at a dhaba on the Goa-Maharashtra border for dinner. I noticed while there had been two drivers on our journey to Goa, there was only one driver on the return journey to Mumbai," said Soni. He remembers trying to catch some sleep as the bus sped, not even slowing down to negotiate potholes. "Around 3am, I remember a deafening sound. We landed at the bottom of a river bed, the bus turned turtle and everyone was squashed inside. We were stuck inside for 15 to 20 minutes, shouting for help," Soni said. "I crawled till I reached the driver's cabin. Along with two passengers, I broke open the cabin door and came out of what had been the front glass," said Soni. He paid an ambulance driver Rs 6,500 to bring him from Khed to Mahim, where relatives admitted him to a private nursing home.
