MUMBAI: The National Federation of the Blind (Maharashtra), NFBOM, which works to improve the lives of visually impaired people, has organised the " blind welfare and education week" from February 6-10.
The event is being held at the Recreational Club near Bhavan's College in Andheri. The NGO is also celebrating the silver jubilee of its talent show 'Samarthya'. More than 800 people from different parts of Maharashtra will participate in 'Samarthya 2013'.
Students from classes I-X have enrolled for competitions in essay writing, elocution and reading in English, Marathi and Hindi through Braille. They will play musical instruments, sing and participate in "double wicket" cricket.
Ophthalmologists will conduct camps and hold lectures on eye care. A procession will be organised to spread awareness about blind people by distributing pamphlets. V S Hegde, general secretary of NFBOM, said, "Better awareness about blindness will ensure that blind people are not received with pity but as equals. It will help wipe out stereotypes. A blind person can perform any task ranging from sewing to operating a computer. He doesn't want sympathy."
