MUMBAI: Origami artist Himanshu Agrawal has sculpted a giant shoe installation which will be on display at the traffic island section of the Kala Ghoda Art Festival 2013 from February 2-10.
The paper sculpture stands 8-ft tall and 3-ft wide. It was created in four days. "I have tried to draw attention to the millions of homeless people who lack basic footwear," says Agrawal, whose work finds mention in the Limca Book of Records. Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding which started in the 17th century and was popularized outside of Japan in the mid-1900s.
It has since then evolved into a modern art form. A flat sheet of paper is turned into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Agrawal has been 'folding' since 1989. He holds the record for crafting a 105-ft origami dinosaur and the tallest origami giraffe. A footwear company claims it will donate a shoe for every 100 'likes' generated for the sculpture online.
