Conman claiming to be IITian held

MUMBAI: A 52-year-old man, who claims to be an engineer from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bangalore has been arrested from the city for posing as a religious preacher and conning people entangled in personal problems.

Gabriel Edwin (52), a Bangalore resident was wanted by the Navghar police since April 2011 for cheating a Bhayander woman Elsi Jimon (41) of over Rs 50.60 lakhs.

Edwin reportedly promised to help Jimon buy a prime property in Bhayander. After collecting the cash from Jimon he vanished. Jimon lodged a police complaint.

The Navghar police got a tip-off that Edwin was in Mumbai. The police tracked his cell phone and nabbed him from Mumbai Central railway station. He is believed to have conned people to the tune of Rs one crore.

Investigations revealed that Edwin had cheated people from across the country, including Chennai, Vishakapatnam,Delhi and Hyderabad. The police have so far learnt of 17 cases registered against Edwin in various police stations in India.

Edwin's modus operandi was to visit churches and preach to those under distress. He had projected himself as a retired army and police officer. Among his victims included Shanti Audro (41) of Mira Road who was cheated of Rs 15 lakhs.

Edwin who claimed to be a mechanical engineer has been remanded to police custody till February 16 by the Thane Sessions court.
