Mumbai: The Central Railway ran 1,201 holiday special trains between April and December 2012 to clear the rush of passengers, a CR spokesperson said.

It plans to run more special trains during the summer season, when schools and colleges will close for vacations.

The senior official further said that there were several new facilities introduced for passengers on CR in 2012.

"We attached 9,802 coaches in various trains as compared to 3,840 coaches attached in 2011. We opened three new stations namely Chouk, Mohope and Chikli for passengers in Karjat-Panvel section last year and halts were provided to Pune-Bhusaval Express at these stations," he stated.

The system of unmanned level crossing counselors was introduced on a trial basis in 2012 to "counsel road users on safety measures at gates with an aim to avoid accidents", he said.

Also, new foot-over bridges were provided at seven suburban stations. The work of widening of staircase of existing FOB at Vikhroli was completed last year, he stated.

The foot-over-bridges at Kopar and Diva were extended while construction of new FOBs at seven stations were in progress. New FOBs have also been planned at Kalyan, Vithalwadi, Karjat and Chembur stations, he added.
