MUMBAI: A magistrate court on Friday extended the judicial custody of the nine accused arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with their alleged involvement in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case to January 18.

The accused in the case however filed several applications in court. Among them suspended IPS officer D G Vanjara's lawyer told the court that the prison officials did allow certain amenities to be used by him. Judge A A Khan directed the CBI to file its reply on the applications on January 10 and January 18.

Nineteen accused including former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, who is out of bail are facing trial in the alleged fake encounter case. Shah had to quit Modi government soon after abduction and murder charge was slapped against him. He was arrested by the CBI on July 25,2010 and had spent over three months in Sabarmati Jail.

The CBI in its chargesheet claims Sohrabbudin and his wife were allegedly abducted by the Gujarat Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) from Hyderabad and killed in a fake encounter near Gandhinagar in November 2005. The arrested accused were shifted to Mumbai following a Supreme Court order to transfer the trial to a court here.
