Smashing is now a spent force

MUMBAI: The disappointing performance of 2012 Indian Oaks winner Smashing in the Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia Trophy, run last Sunday, has left many of her fans questioning her future. Has Vijay Mallya-owned mare run out of the gas and should be retired to stud.

It seems she has developed a knack of giving queer performances. She was a hot favourite on Sunday. Jockey Trevor Patel had kept the mare last till turning for home stretch and when the young rider asked her to put up a grand show, she simple failed to respond. She was clearly a spent force and struggled to take the fourth position.

In her last assignment also in the A C Ardeshir Trophy, jockey Patel sought to essay his challenge close to the inner rails which led to Smashing, who was cruising at that stage, getting squeezed out by Capriole and kissing goodbye to her chances.

In her career, daughter of Holy Roman Emeror has run 12 races so far. She has won six times while finishing second on three occasions. Trainer Pesi Shroff, who is known to keep his wards in forward conditions while entering in any race, has failed to do the magic with Smashing.

Smashing was unlucky to have encountered an opponent like In The Spotlight in her Classics career days. After winning the Indian Oaks last January, She was favourite to win the Indian derby but could only achieve the second placing as In The Spotlight had left Smashing and all her opponents far behind. When the two met again in the Indian Turf Invitation Cup in March, In The Spotlight again beat Smashing.
