MUMBAI: Members of the ISKCON order are preparing a model of the famous Pandharpur shrine at the Shivaji Park ground for the annual chariot festival. The grand rathyatra gets under way on Saturday, January 12, with thousands of devotees expected to join the procession.

Around 200 artisans are working on the set of the Pandharpur temple that will stand 30 ft tall when finished. A tall idol of Lord Vitthal will be accompanied by a sculpture of Saint Tukaram.

The Girgaum Chowpatty branch of ISKCON is recreating the Jagannath Puri rathyatra in Mumbai because not many devotees can make the trip to Orissa to participate in the original.

Around 2.30 pm Saturday, the rally will begin at Shivaji Park onward to Sena Bhavan, Plaza cinema, Maruti Mandir, Portuguese Church and Gokhale Road before returning to Shivaji Park. In the evening, the Warkari community that worships the saints at Pandharpur on Ashadhi Ekadashi day, will present a cultural show. ISKCON head Radhanath Swami Maharaj will deliver lectures.

There is an elaborate fun fair for children and a Vedic exhibition as well. Dinner prasad will be served to all devotees.
