Home minister RR Patil is giving finishing touches to a draft proposals for changes in laws dealing with crime against women and also elderly.
Patil had during a debate in the just-concluded winter session of assembly, had said the state will recommend to the Centre harshest punishment, including death penalty, for cases of gang rapes. Expressing anger and shock over the Delhi incident, several women members of the house had demanded that Maharashtra petitioned the Centre to make provision for the death penalty. If steps are not taken to ensure the safety of women, a time will come when they will take the law into their own hands to punish offenders, women council members had warned. In his reply, Patil had assured the upper house that necessary steps would be taken to make Maharashtra safer for women.
