Mumbai: The BEST plans to conduct random checkings in all buses, specially those which dont have the CCTV cameras installed. The decision was taken after the committee meeting recently wherein members suggested that there should be regular checks by inspectors and other staffers in buses.
" There should be surprise checking in our buses. We need to do this in cognito. This will be a deterrent for unscrupulous elements, including those who harass or molest women passengers during travel,'' said committee member Ravi Raja. "It will also keep terror suspects at bay,'' he stated. In the past, the BEST has been a soft target for terror attacks.
There have been at least two major explosions in BEST buses, resulting in several casualties. Raja also demanded that CCTV cameras be installed in 2,000 remaining buses by March end. The BEST has a fleet of around 4,000 buses, with 50 % fitted with the cameras. He also spoke about the reckless driving by BEST drivers and demanded that there should be refresher courses for all drivers. "We need to procure a simulator, similar to the one purchased by WIAA.
It will help us train drivers on safe driving,'' he said. While flashing bus accident statistics at the meeting, he pointed out that the fatal accidents had peaked in October 2012 when there were 63 accidents and five fatalities. "There is an urgent need to discipline our drivers,'' he added.
