MUMBAI: If statistics revealed by Vinod Tawde, the leader of the Opposition in the state legislative council is to be believed, the population of senior citizens in Maharashtra is nearly 1.25 crore.
"Total population of the state is over 12 crore. Over ten per cent of the total population are senior citizens," Tawde said, adding, "On line of the Central government, the state too should announce its policy for senior citizens."
Tawde even raised the issue in the state legislative council and asked the government to announce its policy at earliest.
Replying to Tawde's query, social justice minister Shivajirao Moghe stated that the government is in process of formulating a policy for senior citizens. "The policy was supposed to be announced by chief minister Prithviraj Chavan in Diwali (2012).
But the announcement was postponed as the guidelines for the policy was not farmed. Next year, by January the process of framing the guidelines would be completed and the announcement would be made in March," the minister added.
