MUMBAI: YUVA-( Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action) in collaboration with Shahar Vikas Manch (SVM) had organized a convention on development plan (DP) of Mumbai in the context of human rights. SVM in partnership with local CBO/ NGO networks is running an awareness campaign on DP and the existing land use (ELU) survey in many parts of the city, with the aim of demystifying and disseminating information about the impact of DP on average Mumbaikar's life.
The convention was a space for representatives of the in-visible Mumbaikars, who constitute 90 percent of the city to come together on one platform and express their need for the right to the city.
The gathering constituted of representatives from more than 15 CBOs and NGOs from all over Mumbai, with technical expertise in the form of Amitha Bhide from TISS, who in conjunction with Ramdas Athavale ( RPI president), Prabhakar Narkar (Janta Dal (S) Mumbai president) thought of how to democratise as well as politicize the exclusionary top-down DP revision process currently in progress.
The meeting was then led by Mohan Chavan (SVM) who invited representatives from P-north, M-east, M-west, L and K-west respectively and also with other sidelined stakeholders like Kolis, pavement dwellers and Hawkers to put forward their studies on ELU survey, and the express their views on the lack of participation in the DP revision process.
