MUMBAI: A junior engineer of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), H ward was caught red handed by the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Saturday when he forcibly extorted Rs 40,000 from a flat owner in Prabhat colony in Santacruz east.

The arrested junior engineer who has been identified as Deepak Manjre has been booked under the prevention of corruption act and has been remanded to police custody.

According to the ACB, the complaint came to light on Friday when accused Manjre who is the junior engineer with the H ward of BMC barged into the flat of complainant and asked to stop the civil work. The complainant was carrying out some major repairs of his flat which was leaking due to rains. Manjre barged into the flat and threatened the workers to stop the work and left a message asking the owner to come and see him at the ward office.

The complainant went to ward office and met Manjre who threatened to send him a show cause stop work notice and demanded Rs 50,000 as bribe. The complainant agreed to pay but he immediately lodged a complaint with the ACB. The ACB laid a trap and caught Manjre red handed at his office when he accepted Rs 40,000 as bribe.
