MUMBAI: As we observe the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on Sunday, the United Nations agency promoting gender equality urged governments across countries to spell out specific commitments to end violence against women and girls. The initiative aims at mobilizing country heads to step up their action against such violence.
The advise comes at a significant time for India which is witnessing various forms of gender-based violence across social classes and borders. Police records show that a woman is raped in India every 20 minutes and the brutal crime has only been rising over the years. The UN estimates that seven in ten women are targeted for physical or sexual violence.
"We all must do better to protect women and prevent this pervasive human rights violation. Governments and leaders must lead by example. Now is the time for governments to translate international promises into concrete national action," stated executive director of the UN Entity for Gender Equity and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), Michelle Bachelet in a press note.
The advice to lead by example is much wanted in India where political leaders cutting across party lines have been indiscriminately passing sexist comments and often indulging in victim blaming after recent instances of violence.
The focus of the UN mandate is on protecting victims and encourages countries to set up free hotline services, provide health and legal aid services to survivors of violence as well as safe houses for their protection.
