MUMBAI: The Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium, once famous for holding free style wrestling contests by late actor Dara Singh and which was under renovation for the last 10 years, may be ready by the end of the year.
Situated right in front of the Haji Ali, Patel Stadium, will be a multi-sports venue of international standards. "We, the newly elected members of the managing committee are keen to support and promote sports. We want to encourage the young aspirations of the game and create sports awareness in the country," said Rakesh Malhotra, the secretary of the National Sports Club of India ( NSCI) which houses and manages the Patel Stadium.
He also pointed out that the NSCI's new multi-purpose indoor sports facilities will be a 'Pride of Mumbai'. "Our indoor facility, which consists of 3.50 lakh square metres, and being constructed at a cost of Rs. 250 crore and is scheduled to be open in the first week of January next year. The venue, which has a seating capacity to accommodate 5,000 spectators, would be able to host a variety of games from basketball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis to name a few," mentioned Malhotra.
However, he was quick to point out that they would not be able to hold cricket matches. "We want to extend our support to the sports which are struggling for funding. By providing them the venue to hold various sports at no or very reasonable rate, we want to support their cause," added Malhotra.
