MUMBAI: Infants and toddlers in the Mira-Bhayander region are not getting their mandatory supplements of iron and vitamin A from municipal hospitals as the supplies have not reached from the central government for the past three months.
It is mandatory to provide children between nine and 36 months of age with vitamin A solution every six months as part of the Indian government's Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) programme. The aim is to protect infants and toddlers from acute respiratory disorders and anemia.
The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) health department which administers the vitamin A doses free of cost has been turning away children since the past three months due to shortage of the supplements. The first dose is given to the infant at nine months. The second dose is administered when the toddler is 18 months.
Thereafter the dose is given every six months till the child turns three. MBMC health officials said that an order for 100 bottles of vitamin A solution has been placed with the government. Health officer Dr Pramod Padwal said that the vitamin supplies should reach the hospitals within a week.
